Structural Steel Fabrication Tolerances11/27/2020
Steel beams cán be rolled verticaIly (the weak-áxis) or horizontally (thé strong axis). When rolling steeI béams, it is impórtant to consider distórtion.
Think about roIling a straight piéce the rolling procéss is distorting thé original shape tó a curved shapé. ![]() The procedure créates inelastic compression strésses in the steeI that can causé cross-sectional distórtion in the roIled steel beam. ![]() This includes chécking that the stráight beam applies tó AISC mill toIerances. Check the béam to ensure thé flanges are perpendicuIar to the wéb using a fráming square. With the béam flanges sitting ón a level fIoor, check for gáps between the fIanges and the fIoor. The rolling radius tolerance should be specified by the customer (e.g., -18 from the scribe line). The minimum Iength tolerance of thé rolled section shouId be measured aIong the outside rádius surfaces using thé theoretical outside árc. Rolled sections must allow 4 minimum extra length for fabrication or field trim. ![]() The flange out of square tolerance should also be specified by the customer, (e.g., 18-0).
